Happy Sunday to you all! We have been doing a lot of walking about this weekend, as well as much relaxing and reading too. I am about 2/3 of the way through The Girl Who Played with Fire and cannot put it down. I am hoping to finish it today!! A great read!!
I will have more food photos after our luxury dinner tonight at the Victoria resort. It's a restaurant/resort modeled after a colonial French plantation ~ always interesting as the French colonization of Vietnam wasn't such a great thing for the Vietnamese. We've been there before for dinner in past years and it's always fantastic! It is meant to be a celebratory dinner for Fruma Nyska, for her upcoming birthday, and for Jonah's fiance, Abby, who has just arrived in Vietnam today and this week is also her birthday as well. So, I will post those pics later.
Thought I would share some more photos from the weekend's wanderings...kind of a hodge-podge of photos. :)
Repair of the Golf Hotel's 1st floor ceiling continues. They are moving along quickly and it's interesting to watch the workers move along very thin pieces of wood with incredible speed and balance.
Again...I hope they solved the leak problem 1st?!?
Amy just informed me that they are nearly completed with closing up the ceiling. Pics to follow!!
This is the Can Tho statue of Uncle Ho (Ho Chi Minh) and in 2007 he was silver in color, but he has been 'touched-up' and is now a lovely bronze color. He looks more regal now...less like the Tin Man.
Local Vietnamese dentist office. Hmm...not sure I would want to go and see a dentist here. But glad they have a dentist for folks to see.
Some manner of meat being sold on the street. Looks like shoulder meat of some sort. I still have a huge fascination with these types of photos...sorry! Dinner, anyone?
We went to the local department store on Saturday around 11am. It was filled with 12 and 13 year old kids...enjoying the photo booth, food court and doing some sort of Christmas-related craft activity as well. There was a bookstore inside as well.
These are books on Nail Art...there were probably 45-60 different books.
These were some classics translated into Vietnamese ~ The Little Prince and Anne Frank.
This book was one of many that gave social cues in Vietnamese for various situations. This one focused on 'How to Join a Party.' It basically gives a script of things to say, questions to ask, etc. Interesting...!
We wanted to get our translator, Phuong, a little gift for all of her help while we have been here in Can Tho, so we found 2 pairs of earrings for her.
The department store offers free gift wrap and provides a box for your item as well ~ pulled from a shopping cart full of recycled boxes. While waiting for our gift to be wrapped a very sweet 13 year old girl approached me and spoke to me in English, asking me my name and where I was from. We had a short conversation and she got to practice her English...she was super-charming.
Here's our lovely and beautifully-wrapped package for Phuong. The strip of silver metallic wrapping is actually the wrapping paper folded back and forth several times to create a decorative flourish...a Vietnamese tradition. We will give Phuong her gift tomorrow night.
A variety of 'Santa/Mrs. Claus-inspired' dresses being sold in a store in Can Tho. Guess it's not too early to do one's Christmas shopping!!
I took this photo just a second too soon, but actually like it quite a lot.
A dad driving the cyclo...look at the tiny pink helmet in front of him, as well as the tiny hands holding onto the front of the bike.
Look at the older woman on the right ~ likely 70 + years old. She was walking and is balancing a bar across her shoulders laden with cooking pots/stove. She then climbed onto the back of the cyclo. Look underneath her left arm/by the left side of the bike...the driver of the cyclo is holding a round, metal table as well.
Talk about balance...
A vintage sewing machine...so cool!!
Some colorful threads. Amy took a dress into a seamstress' shop and they had loads of threads of various colors.
Well...it's storming again now...hopefully the ceiling holds out! Have a great Sunday.
xoxo
Stacy
